Sharleen + Greg's Langdon Hall Wedding
Michelle + Mark
Headed out into the country Michelle + Mark's engagement session this past weekend. It was so great for Michelle's friend to lend us the farm for the shoot!
These two are getting married in a couple weeks at the newly renovated Whistle Bear Golf & Country Club... in fact, I think they might be one of, if not the, first to get married in the new building. It should be fantastic, I can't wait!
Harshini + Mike
Another beautiful spring Toronto wedding with Harshini & Mike!
We started the day getting ready, Harshini at her parents house with the girls and Mike at a nearby hotel with the boys.
A beautiful ceremony at the Islington United Church and then it was off to the beautiful BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, a Hindu temple located in the north end of Toronto. It is absolutely stunning, I only wish they weren't so restrictive on where we could take pictures. I'm never a fan of venues that have favourite/best photo locations... they might be fine, but I don't want my couples wedding pictures to look like everyone else's wedding pictures. I'm always looking for something unique and different... even if it's not the normal.
I think my favourite part of the day was the visit we paid to Harshini's 102 year old grandmother at her nursing home... it was a really touching moment and I was so glad I was there to photograph it. Check out one of my favourite images from that in the gallery up top!
We then headed up to Le Jardin to finish off their portraits and kick off the reception! It was a great team that Harshini put together for this wedding, from the massive team of hair & makeup girls to the amazing wedding planners to the great video guys!

ISPWP Spring Photo Competition
It's always nice when your work as a wedding photographer is recognized by your peers from around the world! I woke up this morning to learn that one of my wedding images had won 5th place in the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers Spring 2014 contest in the Movement & Motion category.
This picture is from an orthodox wedding ceremony in Toronto as the bride and groom circled the alter.
A Single Frame | Kolby + Ethan
Love this image of Kolby + Ethan giving their speech at their Hacienda Sarria wedding in Kitchener that I second shot for Brian Wiebe over the weekend.
I have a secret to confess... I've been obsessed with Leica for around 9 years. Completely unrelated, but I've been a photographer for 9 years. :)
I recently had the chance to finally fulfill my dream of owning a Leica... specifically a black Leica M9 that I picked up used along with a Summarit 35 2.5 lens.
There's just something about Leicas and rangefinders... I can't even explain it, I just love them. Maybe it's the history? Some of the worlds best photographers have used Leicas... Cartier-Bresson, Erwitt, Capa just to name a few. Maybe it's just the lack of automation and options when using a Leica. Either way, it's just fun to shoot with.
You can't talk about Leica's without talking about money. People always talk about how expensive Leica's are and yes, they are eye-watering expensive... unless you're a professional photographer. (we're not even going to talk about the stupid commemorative limited editions!) The list cost of my old Nikon D3 was within a couple hundred dollars of a Leica M9 so that's a wash. For a professional camera body that could last over 5 years that couple hundred dollars is trivial. Then we get to the lenses... yes, they are shockingly expensive. The Summarit 35 2.5 I have is one of Leica's cheapest lenses and is still hundreds more than the top of the line Nikon 35. But they are something to behold. Others have called them jewel-like in their build and finish and I can't argue with that description. Plus, these lenses can last for years... decades even. Because there's no electronics, autofocus or plastic there's very little that can break or wear down.
Right from the get go, this camera just felt right. Sure, there are technical things things that drive me nuts but I think I think most of the other camera manufactures (except maybe Fuji, see my review of the Fuji XPro 1) vastly underestimate the importance of a feel of a camera. Yes it's still just a tool, but if a tool can inspire you then all the better. For me, picking up a Leica was like a first kiss... an electric shock of joy and excitement of new possibilities. Of course, that first kiss was followed by a very steep learning curve. :)
No autofocus, manual rangefinder focussing. This was a huge departure for me from my autofocus DSLR's with their what-you-see-is-what-you-get viewfinders. Hell, you can shoot this camera with the lens cap on if you're not paying attention!
I've had the camera for a couple months now and have been using it exclusively for personal work and bringing it along to all my commercial work... everything from weddings to headshots to theatre photography.
Things I love:
Things I'm just OK with:
Things I hate:
So, most of my issues with the Leica M9 have been resolved, or at least improved, with the M240. Now I just need to convince my wife. :)
Regardless of how that discussion goes, I really do think that my days as a DSLR shooter are very numbered. If not Leica than maybe Fuji, but either way I'll be making a change for 2015.
Headed into Toronto yesterday with my good friends Aron and Sam for a master class lecture by one of my favourite photographers, Gregory Heisler presented by Vistek at the Hart House.
We headed in early to do some shooting around the city, these are some of my favourites.
Julia + Kevin
Had the pleasure of helping my good friend Tim Forbes out with Julia + Kevin's wedding in Toronto's Distillery District.
It was a rainy day so we started off with some portraits in the Stirling Room which the couple had rented just for the occasion, and then headed off to the beautiful St Pauls Basilica for their Catholic ceremony and then back to Archeo for an intimate wedding reception.
The Community Players of New Hamburg
Springtime around here only means one thing... the annual show by The Community Players of New Hamburg.
Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof... this year it's Ragtime!"
The Community Players are one of Canada's premier community theatre groups... someone I know saw Fiddler on the Roof last year at both the Community Players and the professional production at Stratford and much preferred the Players version!
It's always an interesting process to photograph the show from the beginning to the full dress rehearsals.
The shows start thursday night, tickets are on sale here.
